COMMON DIFFICULTIES AND CONCERNS IN PUBLISHING AND SELF-PUBLISHING

THE USUAL ROUTE TO PUBLISHING

Firstly, you would need to educate yourself about the publishing industry. So that you knew much of each part of the production process any one vendor will oversee. Then, you would be familiar with all the steps required to product your book. Next, you will need to contact each vendor. You may then have to go to 7 or 8 individual professionals. Each being a professional in a different area. Each person or company offering a different part of the production and manufacturing process. This would help you to understand how each of them fits into the process. Then you would know what to ask from each of them.

NOT EVERYONE SPEAKS THE SAME TECHNICAL LANGUAGE.

Trying to get pricing and information on producing your book is a very complex process. You could call 6 printer/publishers and you get 12 different prices. Each price will vary with the level of products and services that they offer…

When you finally get their estimates you would have to decide on one. How would you know what you were buying? Would you know if you were overbuying or under-buying their particular service? Does the most expensive price mean you are going to get the best job? Does the least expensive price mean you are going to get the worst quality?

THERE ARE LOTS OF PIECES TO THIS PUZZLE.

Once you decided, how would you know if you got a good deal? Would you be able to judge what the best quality and service looks like? Do you know what your book requires in terms of:
Page Count
Halftones
Color Photos
Final trim size
Paper selection
Opacity
Brightness
Cover stock
Ink colors
Quantity of run
Cover Film Lamination
Paperback
Hard bound
Specialty binding
Delivery schedule

What about timing and workability? Book manufacturing and production is process made up of many steps. Each step is dependent upon the one before it. Also each step must take into account the step to follow. Are you ready to manage every part of the production process with each vendor?
